ISIS-K, short for Islamic State Khorasan, is the Afghan branch of the Islamic State (ISIS) militant group. It emerged in eastern Afghanistan in late 2014 and gained notoriety for its extreme brutality. ISIS-K has carried out numerous attacks, including against mosques and other targets both inside and outside Afghanistan. The group has targeted Russia due to its opposition to Russian President Vladimir Putin and views Russia as complicit in activities that oppress Muslims. Additionally, ISIS-K includes members from Central Asia who harbor grievances against Moscow, contributing to their motivation to attack Russia.
