Eric Montross: Subtitle: A Champion on and off the Court, Beloved Tar Heel Passes Away at 52
Chapel Hill, NC – In a somber announcement, the family of Eric Montross shared the news of his passing on December 17 at the age of 52. Diagnosed with cancer in March, Montross faced his battle with the same determination and grace that marked his life and career.
Montross, a basketball icon who played a pivotal role for the University of North Carolina Tar Heels, was surrounded by loved ones at his Chapel Hill home when he peacefully passed away. The family expressed gratitude for the tremendous support and overwhelming love they received during Eric’s challenging journey.
A member of the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, the medical community rallied alongside Montross, matching his fight with equal passion. The family requested privacy during this difficult period.
Montross, a standout player for the Tar Heels from 1990 to 1994, made an indelible mark on the court. As the starting center in 1993, he played a key role in the team’s NCAA championship victory. His contributions earned him first-team All-ACC honors in 1993, a spot on the John Wooden All-America team, and recognition in the NCAA East Region and Final Four all-tournament teams.
Following his successful college career, Montross entered the NBA as a first-round draft pick for the Boston Celtics, where he played for nine seasons. After retiring from professional basketball, he continued to contribute to the Tar Heel community as an analyst for the Tar Heel Sports Network for 18 seasons. This season, he stepped away from the microphone.
Beyond his contributions to sports, Montross was a devoted family man and a leader in various community endeavors. As the senior major gifts director at the Rams Club, he played a crucial role in securing scholarships for student-athletes. His involvement with the Lineberger Center during college extended into a lifelong commitment to the fight against cancer.
Carolina Athletics released a statement expressing deep sadness at the loss of one of their most beloved former student-athletes. Describing Montross as not just a great player but a man of faith, a dedicated father, husband, and son, the statement highlighted his role as a recognizable ambassador for the University and Chapel Hill.
“We extend our deepest condolences to Laura, his children, and entire family, and his colleagues and friends. The number of people who loved Eric and were touched by him is immeasurable,” the statement read.
As the University of North Carolina mourns the loss of Eric Montross, his legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched with his kindness, passion for the game, and unwavering commitment to making a difference in the world.
