Delhi Chalo: With tensions escalating ahead of the planned ‘Delhi Chalo’ protest by farmers on February 13, the Haryana government, under Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, has intensified preparations to thwart the demonstrators’ march towards the national capital. Here are the top 10 updates on the unfolding situation:

  1. Elaborate Security Measures: In anticipation of the farmers’ march, the Haryana government has implemented stringent security measures, including the installation of cement barricades and iron nails along roads. Media reports indicate the deployment of a seven-tier security cordon to deter the protestors.
  2. Route Diversions and Border Sealing: Authorities have sealed all borders between Haryana and Punjab with massive cement barricades and barbed wires. Additionally, route diversions have been set up to impede the progress of the protestors.
  3. Internet Suspension: Mobile internet services have been suspended in seven districts of Haryana, namely Ambala, Kurukshetra, Kaithal, Jind, Hisar, Fatehabad, and Sirsa, from February 11 to February 13.
  4. CRPF Deployment: Alongside local police forces, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and other security agencies have been deployed to reinforce law enforcement efforts.
  5. Section 144 Imposed: Section 144 has been imposed in several districts of Haryana, restricting assembly and movement of large groups.
  6. Traffic Disruptions: Closure of the Haryana-Punjab border at Shambhu has caused massive traffic jams, inconveniencing commuters traveling towards Ambala and Delhi.
  7. River Bed Dug Up: Officials have resorted to digging up the Ghaggar river bed to prevent farmers from using tractors to access the highway.
  8. Communication Restrictions: Bulk SMS services have been suspended in the aforementioned districts to curb communication among protestors.
  9. Continued Farmer Mobilization: Despite the government’s efforts, farmers are gearing up for the march, with tractor trolleys being prepared for the journey towards Delhi. In Rajpura, farmers have already initiated tractor marches as part of their preparations.
  10. Demands of the Farmers: The protest is fueled by demands including the enactment of a law ensuring a minimum support price (MSP) for crops, implementation of the Swaminathan Commission’s recommendations, pensions for farmers and laborers, farm debt waiver, withdrawal of police cases, and justice for victims of the Lakhimpur Kheri violence.

In the midst of escalating tensions, both the farmers and the government seem resolute in their respective positions. With negotiations ongoing and the protest imminent, the nation watches closely for developments in this high-stakes standoff.
